Digestive system start from the mouth and includes stomach, small intestine, the colon and other systems that help in digestion and elimination: liver, gall bladder, pancreas. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common problem of our society which presents with heartburn, ulcers, regurgitation of the food and acid. GERD is caused by hiatal hernia, H. pylori bacterial infection, dietary and physical problems. Chest pain and burning, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), nausea, cough, and a hoarse voice in the morning are other symptoms of this problem.
Hiccups (synchronous diaphragmatic flutter, singultus) are spasmodic contractions of the diaphragm. Causes are eating too quickly, being hungry for long, taking a cold drink while eating a hot meal, burping, eating very hot or spicy food, laughing vigorously or coughing, drinking excessive amount of alcohol, smoking, serum electrolyte imbalance, certain pain medications, or pressure on the phrenic nerve, stress or excitement. |

The frequency of bowel movements are different in different individuals. Abnormal frequency of bowel movements are called constipation and diarrhea. With constipation stools are usually hard, dry, small in size, and difficult to eliminate. Some people who are constipated find it painful to have a bowel movement and often experience straining, bloating, and the sensation of a full bowel. Causes of constipation are not enough fiber or fluids in the diet, lack of physical activity, stress, and pregnancy. Diarrhea can be caused by bacteria, virus, parasites, toxins, and gastroenteritis. There are at least four types of diarrhea: secretory diarrhea, osmotic diarrhea, motility-related diarrhea, and inflammatory diarrhea. |
| Inflammatory bowel disease: ulcerative colitis and crohn's disease are marked by diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, inflammation and discomfort of the intestines. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is marked by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation and discomfort of the intestines. People with IBS frequently suffer from depression and anxiety, which can worsen symptoms. Hepatitis is defined as inflammation or injury of the liver cells. It can be related to viral illness or chronic use of toxins like alcohol or medications. Symptoms of hepatitis are flu-like symptoms with abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and enlarged liver. |
