Menstruation is the shedding of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) accompanied by bleeding. It occurs in approximately monthly cycles throughout a woman's reproductive life, except during pregnancy. Menstruation starts during puberty (at menarche) and stops permanently at menopause.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones. Luteinizing hormone and

follicle-stimulating hormone, which are produced by the pituitary gland, promote ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone stimulate the uterus and breasts to prepare for possible fertilization. The cycle has three phases: follicular (before release of the egg), ovulatory (egg release), and luteal (after egg release). Hormonal changes are also responsible for menopause and peri-menopausal symptoms.

The symptoms prior to menses (PMS) and during the menses are related to changes in the hormone levels and may include: backache, bloating, nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, irritability, and other mood changes. Women also experience positive sensations such as relief, release, euphoria, new beginning, invigoration, connection with nature, creative energy, exhilaration, increased sex drive and more intense orgasms.

Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 60 and starts with the following symptoms: Hot flashes, changes in sleep, mood changes, headaches or migraines, changes in cycles, Endometriosis is the growth of uterine cells outside of uterus. These cells are under the stimulation of the hormones we discussed earlier and can go through the changes uterus goes through on a monthly basis
